Modern European Decorating

Modern European Decorating

Modern European decor favors simple solid colors, low furniture, clean lines, bright accent pieces, dual function furniture, geometrically shaped accessories and no clutter. The objective for most people is to maximize the usability of their space and to create an environment that is comfortable, updated and easy to use. Storage tends to remain a high priority along with furniture that is convertible or serves more than one function. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Streamline your space. Take a snapshot of each room in your house or apartment during mid-day. This will give you a typical day image and allow you to really see what your home or apartment looks like as you live in it. Paste your photo in a notebook and make notes on what is and what isn't working in each room.

    2

List wallpaper that should be removed, carpets that are busy or shabby, shades or curtains that are worn, torn or nonfunctional. Note clutter that needs to be removed or placed inside storage cabinets. Often improving wall and ceiling color and flooring is the best place to start. This will remove a lot of visual clutter and neutralize your room's foundation.

    3

Incorporate clutter solutions in the form of cabinets or furniture that allows you to store your belongings in the room, yet out of sight. Replace dated or oversized furniture with neutrally colored furniture that incorporates hidden storage and is correctly sized for your space.

    4

Install solid color drapes and fresh blinds. Select artwork with a modern appeal. Often, a few larger pieces will do better than a collection of small pieces. Discard old furniture and belongings that you no longer actively use. Update your lighting fixtures to modern pieces with strong geometric lines.

    5

Select natural textures in neutral colors to add richness and warmth to the space. Make each object in your space an intentional choice rather than something you received from a friend or family member. Gifts that don't suit your taste can be re-gifted to other people who like that style.

    6

Highlight your decor with a bright accent color. Choose pillows, a few decorative objects, candles, vases or other small pieces that you can easily exchange every year or so to keep your look fresh.
