How to Tile the Top of an Outdoor Table

How to Tile the Top of an Outdoor Table

Instead of just using any outdoor table that anyone could purchase, you can create a truly original table by tiling the top of it by hand. Tiling the top of a table will not only allow you to revitalize a vintage table, it also empowers you to create the exact designs and patterns you like. You get to decide everything: whether the tiles should be antique-looking or modern, whether the tiles should be machine- or hand-painted and whether the design should be simple or ornate. You'll also find that tiling a tabletop is a refreshingly simple process. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Measure the recessed top of your outdoor table. Write down the dimensions. Go to a home supply store and get a piece of Masonite board that matches those dimensions.

    2

Apply a coat of polyvinyl glue to the front and back of the board. This will prevent the board from absorbing all the tile adhesive. Set the board into the base of the table. Allow the glue to dry completely.

    3

Arrange the tiles in the pattern or design of your choosing. You can use tiles of any shape, size or style. Once you find a design or pattern that you like, lift each tile one at a time, moving from the center out, and putting five dabs of ceramic adhesive on each tile --- a dab in each corner and one in the center.

    4

Place a flat board of the same dimensions as the tabletop on top of all the tiles. Weigh down the board with weights, phone books, bricks, stones or whatever you have available. Remove the weights and boards after 24 hours.

    5

Work grout into any and all spaces between the tiles, using an old toothbrush or grout sponge to work it into the crevices. Wipe off excess grout with a wet sponge and a rubber scraper. Allow the grout to fully set for 48 hours.
