How to Refinish a Metal Table

If you have an old metal table in your home you love or a metal outdoor table that has become rusted and needs refinishing, then this guide will help you do just that. Metal tables can last much longer than wood if you keep them rust free and clean, but if you have a table that has gotten ahead of you in aging, then you need to take a few simple steps to restore and refinish it.     Put on goggles and rubber gloves.

    Brush the entire surface of the metal table with a wire brush.

    Apply a coat of rust dissolver over the entire metal table surface with a sponge. Allow it to sit for 10 minutes. Rinse the dissolver off with a hose. Reapply the rust dissolver if there is any rust left on the metal table and rinse off the table again.

    Wipe the table dry with a rag. Allow it to air dry for an hour.

    Spray a thin coat of rust-resistant primer over the entire surface. Wait 45 minutes and apply another thin coat of rust-resistant primer to the metal table. Allow it to dry for two to three hours.

    Spray a thin coat of rust-resistant paint over the entire surface. Wait 45 minutes and apply another thin coat of rust-resistant paint to the metal table. Allow it to dry for two to three hours. Apply any touch-up sprays where needed.
